Joseph Cheong has no regrets about WSOP Main Event blow-up

Joseph Cheong finished third this year in the World Series of Poker Main Event. A great finish, but the way he got eliminated was pretty controversial. Cheong 6-bet shoved with Ace-Seven offsuit in a blind battle with Jonathan Duhamel for practically his tournament life. At the start of the hand he was the chipleader with just a little more chips than Duhamel. At the same time John Racener was very short stacked, which is why it seemed pretty stupid to bluf in this particular hand. If you didn’t see it yet, here it is:

The hand has caused a lot of stir on the poker forums all around the world, but Cheung shows no regret about how he played the hand even with the difference of more than $1 million between second and third place.

Joseph Cheong in an interview with Pocket Fives: “I raised his big blind from the small blind with A-7 offsuit and he made a small 3bet. He had been 3betting a lot and is a good player, so I didn’t want to flat. I 4bet and he made a quick, small 5bet. I thought Duhamel was one of the few people that could click it back light and I had an ace blocker. I didn’t feel like waiting for John Racener because he would take forever to bust anyway.”

Cheong earned $4,1 million with his third place finish, while John Racener made a little more than $5,5 million with his second place. Jonathan Duhamel, who got a huge chiplead after the much discussed hand won the WSOP Main Event title plus a cool $8,9 million.
